Owls Class Assembly – Candlemas (3rd February 2026)

Owls Class led a thoughtful assembly all about Candlemas.

We began by exploring the meaning of the quote:
“When the world says, ‘Give up,’ Hope whispers, ‘Try it one more time.’”
The children shared their ideas about hope, perseverance, and how small acts of encouragement can make a big difference.

We then studied James Tissot’s painting The Flight into Egypt, discussing what was happening in the picture and identifying Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. This helped us think about the story of the Holy Family travelling to the Temple, where they met Simeon and Anna.

The children also reflected on refugees today, considering how people might feel when they are forced to leave their homes. We talked about how Jesus would want us to show compassion, and how—like Simeon—people often keep going with hope even when life is difficult.

We learned that Christians light candles at Candlemas to remember Jesus visiting the Temple and to celebrate Jesus as “the light of the world.”
We thought about what it means for us to shine our own light—how we can act, speak and behave in ways that bring hope and kindness to others.

Finally, the children created their own candles to represent what their light might look like.

“Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray.”
